EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY (eft) for women and couples across ontario.
UNDERSTAND THE PATTERNS BENEATH HOW YOU FEEL, REACT, AND CONNECT.
online attachment-focused therapy to help you understand what happens underneath anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, and reltationship disconnection.
What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
Your reactions make sense when we understand what’s underneath them.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps us slow things down enough to understand what’s happening underneath the reactions that can leave you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck.
Rather than asking you to simply think differently or try harder, EFT helps us make sense of why these patterns developed, what happens when they get activated, and what you may actually be needing underneath them. When something feels threatening, uncertain, disappointing, or disconnected, we naturally find ways to protect ourselves.
You might overthink, explain, fix, keep the peace, become reactive, shut down, or try to handle everything yourself.
Over time, these reactions can become automatic. You may know logically that you don't want to respond this way, but still find yourself caught in the same pattern.
EFT helps us slow that process down.
Together, we begin noticing what happens in the moments you feel overwhelmed or disconnected, what your reactions are protecting you from, and the emotions and needs that can be harder to recognize underneath.
Why EFT?
Because understanding something in your head isn't always enough to change what happens in the moment.
You may already know that you overthink.
You may know you take responsibility for everyone.
You may know you shut down during conflict or become anxious when someone pulls away.
And you may still find yourself doing it.
EFT is experiential, which means we don't only talk about your patterns. We slow them down enough for you to begin recognizing what happens as you're experiencing them.
Over time, this can help you respond with more awareness, choice, and self-trust rather than automatically falling back into the ways you've learned to protect yourself.
EFT for Individuals:
Reconnecting with yourself.
For women who have spent years adapting to what other people need, it can become difficult to know what you feel, need, or want.
Individual Emotionally Focused Therapy can help you understand the patterns underneath anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, people-pleasing, overthinking, and the pressure to keep everything together.
The goal isn't to get rid of your emotions. It's to understand the patterns beneath them so you can respond with greater awareness, choice, and self-trust.
EFT for Couples:
Understanding the cycle you're caught in together.
When couples get stuck, one partner may push for a conversation while the other pulls away. One becomes critical while the other becomes defensive. Sometimes both shut down or fight harder to be heard.
EFT helps you understand the cycle that's taken over the relationship and what's happening underneath each person's reactions.
Rather than deciding who's right or wrong, we explore what each of you is protecting and what you're actually reaching for underneath the conflict, so it becomes easier to reach each other differently.
what EFT Can LOOK LIKE IN a session:
We slow it down.
Instead of rushing past difficult emotions, we make enough room to understand what's happening.
We notice the pattern.
We pay attention to what sets the reaction in motion, what you feel, what you tell yourself it means, and what you instinctively do next.
We get underneath the reaction.
Anger, anxiety, shutting down, fixing, or overthinking often protect something more vulnerable underneath.
We make room for something different.
As those patterns become clearer, you can begin experiencing yourself and your relationships with more choice, connection, and self-trust.
Emotionally focused therapy with jennifer Bartok, MSW, RSW
Therapy that helps you understand the pattern, not blame yourself for having one.
I use an attachment-focused EFT approach in my work with women and couples. My role isn't to tell you how you should feel or what decision you should make. It's to help you slow things down, understand what is happening beneath the surface, and become more connected to yourself and the people who matter to you.
EFT isn't about teaching you to suppress your reactions, think positively, or become better at holding everything together. The ways you've learned to cope developed for a reason. We start by understanding them.
From there, we can begin creating enough safety and space for something different to become possible.
You don't need to understand EFT before you begin. You just need somewhere to start.

Common questions about Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), what to expect, and how to get started.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an attachment-based approach that helps you understand the emotions, meanings, and protective patterns underneath how you react to yourself and others. Rather than focusing only on changing thoughts or behaviours, EFT helps us make sense of what is happening beneath the surface so new ways of responding can become possible.

-
Emotions give us important information about what matters to us, what feels threatening, and what we may need. EFT doesn't treat emotions as something to control or get rid of. Instead, we get curious about what they are communicating and how they shape the patterns you find yourself caught in.

No. Although EFT is well known for couples therapy, it is also used with individuals. With couples, we focus on the emotional and attachment patterns happening between partners. With individuals, we explore the patterns shaping how you experience yourself, your emotions, and your relationships.

There isn't a script you have to follow. We might slow down something that happened during the week, notice what you're experiencing in the moment, explore a reaction that keeps repeating, or look more closely at a difficult interaction. I'll help you notice the emotions, meanings, and protective responses underneath the experience so we can understand the pattern together.

EFT is experiential, which means we don't only talk about what happened or intellectually understand why you react the way you do. We also pay attention to what happens emotionally in the moment. This can help you begin experiencing and responding to familiar situations differently, rather than only understanding the pattern in your head.
